Golden Retriever History
Golden Retrievers originated in the Scottish Highlands way back in the late 1800s. The breed was developed by crossing the extinct Tweed Water Spaniel breed with the original yellow Flat-Coated Retriever by Lord Tweedmouth. Later on, he crossed in more Tweed Water Spaniel, Bloodhound, and Irish Setter. Originally called the Golden Flat-Coat, they were later renamed Golden Retriever. Lord Tweedmouth's goal was to create a retriever that was suited for the terrain, climate, and the available game in Scotland. They were used predominantly for hunting purposes.
This breed is known as one of the most popular dog breeds, not simply as family companions, but for hunting, narcotic detection, obedience competitions, guide for blind people, as well as therapy dog. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925.
Appearance of Golden Retrievers
The Golden Retriever is a medium-sized dog that has a sturdy and powerful body. The body is well put together and looks balanced. According to the American Kennel Club, he or she should be shown in hard-working condition, as the breed is primarily a hunting dog.
Males usually grow about 23-24 inches in height, while females grow up to 21 ½ - 22 ½ inches. Average weight for males would be 65-75 pounds while for females about 55-65 pounds.
The skull is broad, with slight longitudinal and lateral arching, but with no jutting of occipital or frontal bones. There is a well-defined stop. The muzzle is straight and blends strongly and smoothly into the skull. The nose is either black or brownish black. The ears are short with the front edges attached behind and just above the eye. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The eyes are intelligent and friendly in expression. The color is usually dark brown, but there are dogs that have medium brown ones. Forequarters are well coordinated with hindquarters and are muscular. Hindquarters should be strongly muscled and broad.
They have two coats, with a firm and resilient outer coat, and a good undercoat. The outer coat should not be silky or coarse and could be either wavy or straight. The color should be a lustrous and rich golden color of varying shades. The feathering on the coat could be lighter than the other parts of the coat.
The expression on the face should be kind. Personality-wise, Golden Retrievers are alert, eager, and self-confident.
