Are Westies the Right Breed for You?

Before you get Westie puppies for sale in TX from any of the breeders you meet, you should also do some research on what type of dog the Westie is. Is it truly the right dog for your household? One of the good things about choosing a purebred is because you already have an idea as to how your dog should look like in terms of size, coat, and temperament, and even the care that your dog should need. Knowing what your puppy will look and act like when he or she grows up, as well as the kind of care he will need, is one of the key factors in selecting the perfect breed for your home. Other key factors to choosing a good breed are temperament, activity levels, and personality.

You should also consider if you have enough time to take care of your puppy, as well as whether he fits your lifestyle. If you are unsure, we are here to help you out and give you advice on how to pick out the right breed.

History of Westies

This breed is a short-legged type of terrier. The West Highland White Terrier, also called Westie, is said to share the same roots as Skye, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, and Scottish Terriers. Legend has it that Westies were originally bred from the white offspring of Scottish and Cairn Terriers. The people wanted to create a terrier that could hunt but would not be mistaken as a fox. They were also once known as Poltalloch Terriers, named after the estate of the Duke of Argyll. The breed was first presented at a London dog show back in 1907 and was registered originally as Roseneath Terrier in 1909. It was only in 1909 that the name was changed to West Highland White Terrier.

It is currently ranked 34th among the breeds that have been registered in the American Kennel Club. They have become a popular breed due to their intelligence and skills.

Westie Appearance

West Highland White Terriers are sturdy little dogs, with well-balanced bodies. They possess a tough frame that is covered with a white coat that is approximately 2-inches in length. The coat is always white but there are some dogs that may have a darker dorsal streak. Their heads are round and are a bit longer than their muzzles. They also have black noses and have wide-set eyes that are almond-shaped. They also have an alert expression, with small pointy ears that are set wide apart at the top part of the head. These dogs also have muscular necks and sloping shoulders. Their tails, described as carrot-shaped by many, are carried high. Their legs are a bit short but are not too low from the ground.

These dogs have a double coat. The outer coat is hard and helps to keep the inner coat clean. The inner coat is softer and denser than the outer one.
