Short History of Labrador Retrievers

This breed was originally helpers for fisherman in Newfoundland and was called a ‘St. John's Dog'. Those fishermen trained the pups to dive in cold and icy waters to assist them in pulling in their fishing nets.

Around the 1800s, Englishmen from Labrador noticed the breed's excellent traits and decided to bring some pups to England. After some time, they crossed the breed with other hunting dogs like Spaniels and Setters to upgrade the hunting instincts of Labrador Retrievers.

As of today, this breed is a very popular pet in the United States. And aside from being a house pet, Labrador Retrievers are excellent show, sled, cart, guide, watch, police, and hunt dogs.

Appearance of Labrador Retrievers

This breed has two types. The first one is the American Labrador, while the second one is the English Labrador. The main difference between the two is that the English breed is bigger than the American breed.

On the other hand, the double coat of Labradors is straight and smooth. A pup's coat color can vary from chocolate, yellow, and black. However, rumors say that some Labradors rarely acquire gray or silver colored coats. Nevertheless, people are still debating whether it is an effect of crossbreeding with a Weimaraner, or true mutation.
