Are Shetland Sheepdogs the Right Breed for you and your Family?

Choosing the right dog can be a difficult task. This is where research plays a good part in the role of helping you with your decision. By looking through the Shetland Sheepdog puppies reviews, you can find out if the temperament and physical characteristics of the dog breed that you choose is right for you. Dogs have always been great companions for families and are seen as guard dogs, members of the family, companions, and guides. Buying a Sheltie puppy instead of another breed is a decision that is not difficult for pet lovers to make.

Sheltie puppies for sale in New Jersey are known to be one of the most intelligent breeds. They are easy to train, athletic, loyal, and are graceful athletes. Natural born herders and quite protective of their family, Shetland Sheepdogs make great guard and watch dogs. When trained and socialized at a young age, these dogs are great companions to both adults and children.

Shetland Sheepdog History

Shelties are related to the Rough Collie. Both these dog breeds are descendants from the inhabitants of Scotland known as Border Collies. Brought into Scottish land, Border Collies were crossed with a small extinct island dog known as the Icelandic Yakkin. In the 1700's, the Shetland Sheepdog breed was developed and these dogs were used to guard and herd miniature flocks of the Shetlands. First recognized in the early 1900s in England and by AKC in 1911, this dog breed is known as today's most famous companion dogs. They excel in competitions for obedience, have talent for agility, guarding, herding, being a watchdog, and are intelligent enough to be trained to do different tasks like performing tricks. This breed catches on quick with Sheltie puppy training.

Shetland Sheepdog Appearance

Very much like a Rough Coated Collie, the Shetland Sheepdog has a muzzle that tapers slightly from the nose to its ear and has a head shaped like a blunt wedge. Their teeth meet in a level or scissor bite. They have black noses and tiny ears that are ¾ erect with its tips folding forward. They have muscular necks that are arched and their tail is carried straight down, sometimes, in a slight upward curve that reaches the hock.

They have double layered coats, the top being straight and rather rough to the touch while the inner coat is soft and tight. Their coats which are abundant and long around the body, come in various shades such as blue merle, black and sable, with varying amounts of tan and white. While most Shetland Sheepdogs have dark almond shaped eyes, those with blue merle coats have blue eyes. They can shed depending on the season, but their coats are easy to care for. Bathing or shampooing is not required unless it is completely necessary.

This health check is performed by the breeder's veterinarian, who is required to fill out our Veterinary Health Report. This report, created for us by a licensed veterinarian, is designed to examine the condition of every puppy for:
