Basic Purebred Beagle Facts That You Should Know

The exact origins of the Beagle are unclear, although it is believed that the ancestors of the Beagles were hunting hounds in England before the arrival of the Romans. The standard Beagle breed was first developed in England in the 1840s with four distinct varieties emerging, including fox Beagles and medium Beagles.

The Beagle was first brought to America in 1870, and these became the models of what would become the standard American Beagle. Breeding of the breed continued and the Beagle was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. Although initially bred for hunting, the Beagle also became popular family pets in the early 20th century due to their compact stature and short coats, which does not require much grooming. In addition, since Beagles are pack dogs, they bond well with their human families. Their strong sense of smell also leads Beagles to be naturally curious dogs that are always getting into mischief.

According to the AKC, the American Beagle can be thirteen to fifteen inches in height and can come in any hound color, including red, lemon or white. In addition, the coat should be of medium-length and hard and close. Purebred Beagles should not exceed fifteen inches in height. Beagles resemble miniature foxhounds, but with shorter muzzles and broader heads. Their most distinctive feature is undoubtedly their long ears, which are low-set and long, and rounded slightly at the ends. As suits their status as hunting dogs, Beagles have a medium-length neck that easily bends to the ground when picking up a scent, as well as a broad chest and a curly tail that has a distinctive white tip that stands upright when the dog is on the hunt and allows them to be easily seen.
