Westie History

The history of the Westie is agreeably one of the interesting ones, as mentioned by a lot of people. Legend has it that West Highland Terriers were originally bred from the offspring of the Scottish and Cairn Terriers. But according to studies, the Westie comes from Poltalloch, Scotland. This is the reason why they were once called Poltalloch Terriers. They were bred so that the people could make a hunting terrier that would not be mistaken as a fox by hunters. The breed was first shown at a dog show in London back in 1907 and was later registered in 1908 by the AKC. Originally named and registered as Roseneath Terriers (named after the estate of the Duke of Argyll), it was in 1909 that the name was changed to west Highland White. The breed has then become more and more popular as these dogs make great companions and hunting dogs.

Westie appearance

The Westie, or the West Highland White Terrier is a small but very sturdy dog. The head, when viewed from the front of the dog looks round in appearance. It is also in proportion to the body. It has a blunt muzzle that is a bit shorter than the size of the skull and it tapers as it approaches the nose. There is a well-defined stop. The nose is colored black. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. The dog has dark-brown eyes that are deep-set and almond-shaped. They are set wide apart. The ears are wide apart and are erect on the top of the head. The legs are short but are not very low from the ground. The breed also has a relatively short tail that is undocked.

The Westie is also strongly built and exhibits good showmanship. It has a straight back and has muscular legs with powerful hindquarters. The coat is about two inches in length and is colored white. The hair is hard, but with a lot of soft undercoat. In presentations, the coat at the sides and the back should be trimmed so that it blends with the coat found in the shoulder and neck area.
