History of the Boxer
The Boxer's ancestors were the Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer originated in Germany. Boxers were originally used for a variety of purposes such as dog fighting and bull baiting, and were known for their ability to herd cattle. As time evolved they were used in theatre productions and as circus dogs. All during this period of time they varied in their size and looks. The name Boxer is most fitting for the breed, as the dog looks like it is boxing when pitted against an opponent. He will use his front paws to swipe at his opponent. This is an intelligent breed that has been used for police work, search and rescue and other types of important roles. They have made their way into the hearts of many Americans as they are the 7th most popular breed in the USA today.
The Boxer's Looks
The Boxer has a very distinctive look about him that is most impressive. His ears are set high on his distinctly proportioned head that matches well with his powerful body. He is packed full of muscles that show well over his entire body. He has a short muzzle with a coal black nose. The coat is short and smooth and you will see various colors in the Boxer that can range from different shades of brown such as fawn or tan. Some have some beautiful mahogany shades with some black or white being evident as well. A fully grown boxer could range between 55 to 70 pounds. The female will be slightly shorter averaging around 21.5” and the male about 23.5”.
