Yorkie History
Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies for short, comes from a family of terriers that used to be used in coal mines and textile mills in Yorkshire during the Industrial Revolution. The Clydesdale Terrier or the Paisley Terrier were made to catch rodents roaming in the mills and factories. It is believed that these Terriers were crossed with other types of terrier in order to develop the present-day Yorkie.
It was in 1870 when the Yorkie got its name, nearly ten years after it appeared in a bench show in England. According to the British Kennel Club’s official records, this dog breed was put in the organization’s registry in 1874. By 1878, Yorkies were bred in the US as well and were featured in many dog shows. The Yorkies in the US today are superstars in dog shows and parades, with their glamorous coat and spunky personality.
Yorkie's Appearance
Yorkies are among the most elegant and glamorous among the various toy dog breeds around today. Despite its diminutive size, it stands tall on personality and looks with its long and silky coat and the topknot perkily standing atop the small round face of the Yorkie. Ideally, Yorkies should have a shoulder measurement of about 8 to 9 inches and a body weight of about four to six pounds. Litters of this breed can be quite inconsistent in size, with one litter being bigger or heavier than another. Responsible breeders, however, caution would-be pet owners against those offering Yorkies that are significantly smaller than standard sizes.
Yorkie's Temperament
The Yorkie is a star and he knows it. He is a smart and confident dog who likes getting attention from the people around him. People training your Yorkie at the earliest possible time will help you and your dog adjust to your new family life. Early socialization with the family is also recommended especially for puppies to give them time to interact and have fun. Cuddly and perky by nature, Yorkies can be carried around and kept close by their owners. It is best for pet owners to hold off on pampering and fanning the self-assured air of this family dog.
Yorkie's Role
There is no doubt about it, Yorkies are affectionate and loyal companions for their owners. Since they are small, they are just the right size for smaller kids who want to have a pet. Owners, however, have to be careful to watch their kids while playing with their Yorkie or any other dog for that matter. Although too small and prissy for a guard dog, Yorkies can also bark at strangers and alert owners when there are intruders in the house.
