Poodle History

The poodle originally came from Germany, where it was bred to be a water retriever, retrieving game fowl shot by its owners. Unlike other breeds, however, the poodle’s three sizes – primary, toy and miniature – were not bred for specific purposes but naturally developed. The standard-sized poodle is the oldest of the three varieties and the practice of clipping a poodle’s hair originated because of the need to make it a more efficient swimmer. The smaller poodle varieties were used to hunt for truffles, since their smaller feet did less damage to the fungus when they were digging it up. In the 18th century, poodles were among the principal pet dogs in Germany and France, where they were pampered favorites in the court of Louis XVI.

The Poodle Appearance

The poodle is one of the most elegant breeds, with an intelligent demeanor and balanced proportions, including a deep chest and muscled shoulders. The standard-sized and miniature poodle varieties measure fifteen inches measured from the highest point of the shoulders, and weighs some 45 to 70 pounds. The toy poodle measures ten inches and weighs around six pounds. Poodles boast of a coat that is either curly with a harsh texture or hanging in tight cords of different lengths, and which comes in various shades of browns, grays, silvers, apricots and café-au-laits. The poodle also boasts of dark eyes with an alert appearance and large floppy ears that hang close to the head, as well as a long, straight muzzle.

The Poodle’s Temperament

The poodle is a lively, affectionate dog that bonds quickly with its family, acting protectively towards them by barking when they sense that something is out of order. They thrive best when their families shower them with physical affection as well as taking time to play games with them. Poodles are also sensitive dogs that are quick to pick up on their owners’ moods and their temperament may reflect whatever their master is feeling that day. They may also be shy among strangers and people they are unfamiliar with. Despite their fancy grooming, poodles carry themselves with dignity as if they had a sense of how attractive they are. However, this does not mean that they take themselves seriously and some poodle owners even swear that their pets seem to have a sense of humor.

The Poodle’s Role

With their pleasant temperaments, poodles make excellent family dogs and are always happy to participate in family activities. They also make good watchdogs since they are protective of their families. While some poodles can be high strung dogs who bark excessively, this can be addressed with proper socialization and training, and they rarely display aggressive behavior.
