Maltipoo History
Maltipoos are not purebred dogs; therefore, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, or the AKC. They are a recently-popularized hybrid, considered designer dogs, and are a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle.
Maltipoos can also be known by other names, such as Malti-Poo, Malt-a-poo, Malt A Poo, and Maltepoo. Though they are not recognized by the AKC, they are recognized by other canine clubs for their popularity. Some of these canine clubs are the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the International Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry.
Appearance of Maltipoos
Maltipoos are small, toy-sized dogs, which are accounted by their parents, the Maltese and the Poodle. They have a small-sized head with a short pointed muzzle ending with a black nose. Their bright round eyes are often obscured by their long facial hair. Their ears are set high on each side and lie flat.
Though the Maltipoo’s coat looks dense, these dogs shed little to none at all. Their coat length varies from medium to long, and can be straight, wavy, curly, or mixed in between. Colors also vary from single colors to combination, but are most often cream and black and white.
Adult Maltipoos can be anywhere from 8 inches to 14 inches tall at the shoulders.
Maltipoo’s Temperament
Maltipoos took on the wonderful characteristics of their parents. Maltipoos are generally gentle, friendly dogs. They are loyal to their human families, docile with children, and are wary of strangers. They are quite intelligent, and with training, will be easy to teach discipline as well as tricks.
Due to their size, Maltipoos do not require extensive exercise, though they can be active and will enjoy running and other kinds of raucous play. They can easily adapt to homes with small spaces, as they are content in running around the house as they are also content in just being petted while lying on their owner’s lap.
A Maltipoo’s Role
Maltipoos were originally bred to be companion dogs, and they are very popular ones, at that. The Maltipoo inherits the Maltese’s inquisitive nature while inheriting the Poodle’s lovable and protective nature. This makes the Maltipoo a perfect companion for those who are living alone, such as the elderly, and even for those who have children in the family.
Their protectiveness with the human families and wariness with strangers also makes them excellent watch dogs, despite of their small size. These things, along with the Maltipoo’s convenient size, make them a popular breed also for those who are living in small spaces, like condos or apartments.
