They can also assist the handicapped, rescue people, search for items, and obey instructions at competitions. Another valuable addition to Labrador Retriever dog breed information is its loyalty to its owner, which also make this puppy one of the best companions and helpers. Facts - Overview

Otherwise known as the Lab, the Labrador Retriever dog breed originated in Newfoundland and was used to assist fishermen in hauling nets, and retrieving from the water. They are also good in retrieving waterfowls and other objects, a characteristic that adds to their charm and versatility. Because of their athletic nature and their high energy levels, Labradors need a lot of exercise and games. Needless to say, they are the perfect pet to have around the house.

Labrador breed info would tell you that these dogs not only excel in hunting but also in swimming. Since they have webbed feet, they can easily wade in water. Thanks to their thick fur, they can withstand the cold temperature of the pool.

Children will also find the Labrador an approachable pet because it is not afraid of people. In fact, it is a brave dog and likes the company of people and other canines. Its keen intelligence also makes it a good bet in competitions because Labradors follow directions easily.

Since this breed has higher energy levels than other dogs do, the Labradors can also survive outdoors. Another unique feature of the Labrador is its ability to adapt to its environment and to the nature of the work at hand. With this breed, you have a field dog, a house dog, and a yard dog rolled into one. The Labrador Retriever is very versatile and can become a real favorite in your home.Their friendliness likewise adds to their charm, and that makes this dog breed the perfect playmate for children.

You can also caress the dog’s smooth, thick fur, which makes it more adorable to families. The Lab possesses a kind of affectionate demeanor and sense of obedience that makes them a reliable all-around pet.

You can always count on a Labrador Retriever to assist you in whatever activity you choose. For more information about the Labrador, browse our pages on personality and grooming.

Facts - Personality

Labrador Retrievers are commonly taken in as pets because of their friendliness and loyalty. Their unmistakable energy makes them one of the “happiest” dogs you can have as a pet. The proof lies in the way they greet you when you come home from a long day at work, or when they run and play fetch for hours and still look as if they’re willing to keep doing it for the whole day.

The Labrador’s personality is akin to man’s – the dog is keen on learning new tricks, so you will never get bored of training it. From their name itself, you could already surmise that they like to catch things and that its unbeatable energy does not get depleted. Take this breed on a long walk, a day’s worth of playing fetch or hiking, and hours of training, and you’ll be rewarded with a very happy and contented canine.

Generally, the Labrador Retriever’s temperament is easy to deal with, especially if you’re the type who likes the tail-wagging and cheerful pet, and the kind who is very eager to gain friends and playmates, and a dog who is easy to please.

In addition, you can keep this pet happy by providing a lot of varied exercises. These puppies love to play all the time, so a large space in your home will also prove to be beneficial for your new pet.

Because Labradors are highly receptive to instructions, you will surely have a good time thinking of tricks to teach them. For starters, you must train them with basic moves like carrying an object, or running to and from a direction. Moreover, the best thing a Labrador should learn is patience, especially when they were asked to stay in an area.

Facts - Care

Labrador Retriever care encompasses giving them proper food, regular exercise, and keeping their happy disposition. Maintaining a schedule of activities for your pet is a good thing to start with. For instance, daily checking of its hygiene is one of your responsibilities once you adopt a new Labrador.

Regular checking includes the exercises required of the Labrador, such as walking, running, swimming, and hiking. It is also customary for you to inspect what your pet eats – the diet must conform to your dog’s activities. Another matter to be concerned with is the grooming and taking of your pet to the veterinarian for general check-ups.

Proper Labrador puppy care is also needed if you really want to maintain a healthy relationship between you and your pet. If you have a pool in your home, check whether it is empty whenever your puppy is around. Labradors love to swim and would take every opportunity to jump into the cool water.

Start training your dog early as well, so that it wouldn’t be hard for you to control it in the long run. Keep soft toys and bones handy when their chewing habit kicks in. Labradors like to run and play inside your house, so make sure they have plenty of area to move about.

Facts - Grooming

It pays for your pet to look good. Like people, they need to be cleaned and groomed to maintain proper hygiene. The following sections will enlighten you on how to groom Labrador Retrievers.

Appearance

Labrador Retrievers have a wide muzzle and a broad head. Part of their charm is their very friendly eyes that seem to twinkle at people. They also have straight forelegs and a chest that extends to their elbows. Their athletic build also suggests that they can move fast and move a lot. Other characteristics that set them apart from the rest are their strong back and their distinguishable “otter” tails. They also come in three colors: brown, yellow, or black.

Size and Weight

Male Labradors should weigh from 65 up to 80 pounds, whereas the females should be as heavy as 55 to 70 pounds. As for the size, males should be 22.5 to 24.5 inches when they stand; females should be at 21.5 to 23.5 inches.

Coat and Color

The double coat of Labrador Retrievers protects them from cold temperature and wet conditions. They have a short, thick, and straight top coat, and a weather-resistant undercoat. You may also choose from three colors of Labradors: brown, black, or yellow. Their coat is smooth to touch and makes them irresistible to pat.

Grooming Needs

Because this dog breed sheds heavily, brushing their coat regularly is a no-nonsense part of Labrador grooming. Brushing controls their fur, thus avoiding flyaways. Although Labradors like to get dirty, bathing them often will not be a chore because they also like water.

Always be wary of earwax buildup, which should be cleaned with a cotton ball, not a cotton swab, as the latter could cause irritation. To prevent tartar, you should brush your pet’s teeth every week. Trimming their nails is also a step away from getting pesky worms. Make your dog’s regular trip to the veterinarian a must.

To keep your adorable Labrador Retriever healthy, proper grooming and maintenance is necessary. A healthy and well-groomed dog also means that its owners truly love it and treat it as part of the family.

Facts - Health

A Labrador Retriever’s nutrition need not intimidate you. Dogs do have certain nutritional requirements, and they are different from your own. It is vital that you choose food that is packed with nutrients, minerals, and vitamins, and one that is less in artificial flavoring. As much as possible, choose the pet food brands that are known to be healthy and balanced.

While it is a must to keep your pet well-fed, there is such a thing as over-feeding your puppy. There is a particular proportion ideal for a dog depending on his activities and size. Usually, a bigger portion of food is given to more active pets. Also, always provide fresh water every time your dog would eat.

A regular trip to the vet steers your pet away from diseases such as patellar luxation, or the displacement of the patella from the joint; glaucoma, which is the characterized by fluid build-up in their eyes; elbow and hip dysplasia; diabetes mellitus; melanoma; and obesity.

Labradors are also not exempted from more serious diseases and injuries such as progressive retinal atrophy, lymphoma, insulinoma, and cranial cruciateligament rupture (CCL) – the limited movement and rotation of the dog’s leg.

With this information, you can be armed with proper care and advice to guard your Labrador’s health. It may sound a lot, but as they say, prevention is better than cure.

Facts - History

The history of Labrador Retrievers originates in Canada during the 17th century. At the turn of the 18th century, Canadian water dogs were categorized into several types: the Landseer, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Newfoundland, the Flat-Coated Retriever, and the Labrador Retriever. According to locals, these dogs were found to be helpful around fishermen because they haul nets and retrieve waterfowl. Because they had a smooth coat, they did not need high maintenance, and thus could be brought along in under any weather condition.

British sportsman Colonel Hawker remarked that the Labrador Retriever was “by far the best for any kind of shooting” because of its agility. The Labrador was quick to run, fight, and swim, which makes them excellent hunting companions.

When the Newfoundland Sheep Act was released along with provisions for heavy tax on dogs, the Labrador lost its popularity. In the late 19th century, the importation of dogs were hindered by British quarantine laws, resulting to the non-selective cross-breeding with other retrievers.

In 1903, the Labrador Retriever was recognized by the Kennel Club of England as a separate dog breed. The American Kennel Club for its part registered the Labrador in 1917. Many dogs were imported in the 20s and 30s, although the Labrador was mainly bred as a shooting dog.

Now, Labradors are back in the game. Even if the Labrador’s history involved problems in tax and importation, these lovable dogs have now become popular family pets and guide dogs.
