There are two types of Labradoodles; the American Labradoodle, which is a hybrid, and the Australian Labradoodle, which is a purebred dog.
Labradoodles are quite new dogs—they only came about in the 1980s. The cross between the Labrador or Labrador Retriever and Poodle came about when Wally Cochran, a member of The Royal Guide Dogs from Victoria, Australia, received a request from a blind woman in Hawaii asking for a guide dog that will not aggravate the allergies of her husband. After crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle, the Labradoodle was born.
1998 gave birth to two more sizes of the Labradoodle, the miniature and the medium size. These days, the Australian Labradoodle has the standard, the medium, and the miniature sizes.
American Labradoodbles, however, are first-generation hybrids of Labs and Labrador Retrievers and Poodles.
Appearance of Labradoodles
Labradoodles resemble Poodles more than their Labrador parents, with thick curly coats of white, black and or mix gray. The standard Australian Labradoodles can be 23-26 inches tall at the shoulders; the medium can be 18-21 inches tall; while the miniature can be 14-17 inches.
One of the things that Labradoodles are famous for is their coat. There are two types of coat, depending on the Labrador parent. Coats can be either Fleece or Wool Curly. Their coat is soft and curled softly, and best of all is the fact that it does not typically shed.
Colors can range from black, gray, silver, apricot, cream, chocolate, and a whole lot more.
Labradoodles are extremely friendly and sociable dogs. They will make great companions as they are gentle with children and other family pets. They are intelligent, so tricks and training can be easily taught. Their coat also makes them wonderfully appropriate for an asthmatic, as they do not typically shed.
A Labradoodle’s Role
Labradoodles are versatile dogs, from becoming companions to becoming working dogs. Their intelligence makes them to be indispensable working dogs for the blind and the disabled. They are easy to work with, as they are eager to please and quick to learn new tricks.
Labradoodles are perfect for families with kids, and for those who might have allergies because of their typically non-shedding coats. They are also wonderful companions for the elderly, for their innate sense of protectiveness and gentleness with their human family automatically seeks to protect them from strangers and other suspicious characters and activity.
