In fact, the Labradoodle is specifically bred to be non-aggressive, which means that the pooch is perfect for families. Their size puts them in the medium-range with a personality that’s very receptive to proper training.

The Labradoodle dog breed is often well-controlled and quiet, but like all dogs – they can be quite active and playful when excited. It’s only natural for the pooch to seek a pack alpha and without this; they may become harder to manage. This is why it is important early on to show strong leadership with this pooch. Labradoodles are known for their loyalty and gentleness, often interacting well with children and the elderly. They are also good with other pets, especially when socialized early on. As with all breeds, it is important to teach children how to approach the Labradoodle to prevent tension from the pooch.

Their energy level is mid-range, which means at least one hour of exercise daily. They do well in a small yard but relish long walks that will tire them out for the rest of the day. With sufficient exercise, Labradoodles can live the apartment lifestyle. Note though that Labradoodles are not the type who bark consistently which is a good thing if you live in the city. On the other hand, this doesn’t really make them ideal guard dogs but when it comes to their owners, Labradoodles are wonderfully protective.

Coat types vary with the Labradoodle, but the most common ranges between 4 to 6 inches with a single coat. Colors can also range from white, black, yellow, and a combination of more. The breed is also known for their intelligence and eagerness to learn. Housebreaking Labradoodles is fairly easy, especially when you start training early.

A mild-mannered, intelligent, and loyal dog – the Labradoodle makes for the ideal family pet.

Facts - Personality

The Labradoodle is fast becoming a popular breed, for the simple reason that they are incredibly lovable dogs. The Labradoodle personality is ideal for families who want a pooch that is intelligent, loyal, well-mannered, and playful. Here’s what you should know about this particular breed:

Friendly: Bred to be non-aggressive, the most outstanding Labradoodle temperament is their friendliness. The breed can be very welcoming and love everyone they meet, especially when they’re taught how to socialize in a very early age. Labradoodles thrive in a family setting and will have no problem interacting with human or pet visitors. When it comes to living with other dogs and pets, the Labradoodle is both gentle and considerate.

Well-Mannered: This breed has terrific manners, and not just because they’re friendly! They’re not fond of barking or yapping too much so if you happen to have neighbors, there’s no need to worry about any complaints! Confident and alert, these dogs will often be the first person to the door whenever they hear someone approaching.

Eager: Labradoodles have this innate eagerness to please their owners. They are willing to play when coaxed, often showing a love for fun that can delight the whole family. They love to show off and socialize with practically anyone within their immediate argument. When you need peace and quiet however, this breed is equally happy to just sit back and relax.

Intelligent: The breed is known for their intelligence, especially since Labradoodles are a hybrid of two very smart breeds. They are easily trained with the right approach and look forward to learning new tricks. It doesn’t take much to teach this pooch toilet training and obedience lessons.

Facts - Care

Labradoodle puppy care involves proper feeding, exercise, playtime, and training. You might be new to this at first, but you’ll find that the pooch can also adjust to your life style as you make room for him in your life.

Mid-range when it comes to energy levels, Labradoodle care often involves a maximum of one hour exercises, usually comprised of walks or play around the yard. With sufficient exercise, you’ll find that the pooch becomes more receptive to training, becomes well-mannered, and will have no problems with their diet. Once you manage to supply the pooch with sufficient workouts, you’ll note that other Labradoodle training methods become so much easier. Note that boredom is bad for this breed, so it’s important to keep them both physically and mentally stimulated.

Naturally intelligent, Labradoodles are receptive to training and can pick up housebreak lessons fairly easy. Obedience is also not a problem for the breed thanks to their innate desire to please their owners. They enjoy playtime and place special attention on squeaky toys. Labradoodles also need socialization once in a while to make them friendlier, not just with people but also with other dogs.

Note that Labradoodle care involves paying close attention to grooming needs. Although they’re meant to be non-shedding, there are different coat variations which mean that you have to pay close attention as the pooch grows to adulthood. Their coat makes them easily adaptable to different weather conditions.

A relatively healthy breed, Labradoodles require basic care and a powerful leader to keep them happy.

Facts - Grooming

Appearance

Medium in size, the coat of Labradoodles are typically between 4 to 6 inches in length. It’s a single coat which makes it easy for you to groom the strands all the way to the roots. One thing to note is that the physical appearance of the Labradoodle does not follow a standard. Since they are relatively new, appearance may lean towards any of the parent breeds. It is therefore common to meet a Labradoodle with Poodle-ish features with the coat of a Labrador or vice versa. The nose is typically black but varies with coat color. The ears flap down to their sides and they have a well-defined stop. Body types are meant for athletic pursuits with a square shape that makes them appear graceful.

Size and Weight

Average Labradoodle size is between 22 to 24 inches for the male and 21 to 23 inches for the female. Weight is around 50 to 65 pounds. Note however that there are three size categories for this breed: standard/average, medium, and miniature. A miniature can measure around 14 to 16 inches.

Coat and Color

The single coat comes in different colors ranging from caramel, apricot, gold, chalky white, red, café, cream, chocolate, parchment, blue, black, and silver. Parti colored coats are also a possibility with some breeds which essentially translates to sable, phantom, brindles, and patched colors.

Grooming Needs

Labradoodle grooming varies depending on the coat type of the pooch. Generally however, the coat must be groomed at least twice a week – daily if you can find the time for it. Due to the length, this breed requires frequent trimming, especially along the rump area. Some Labradoodles are medium-shedders while others shed the whole year round. Give this pooch a bath only when needed while basic grooming needs must be done on a routine basis. This involves ear cleaning, teeth brushing, and trimming of the nails. Learning how to groom Labradoodle takes patience, especially if you happen to get a shedding pooch. The fact is that coat variations may differ from one puppy to another even though they came from the same litter. This means that if your pooch sheds, daily brushing would be best.

Facts - Health

Labradoodle health is one of the highlights of this breed. They are typically of good health, especially when given proper food and sufficient exercise. Like all other breeds however, they are susceptible to different health problems, typically from both sides of the breed parentage. This includes hip dysplasia, ear infections, and even allergies. It is best to have your dog checked on a routine basis to avoid or prepare for such problems. A correct grooming routine may also help keep these conditions in check, especially if the pooch displays any allergic reactions. With consistent brushing, you should be able to spot skin allergies before they cause damage to the skin of the pooch.

In the long run however, Labradoodle nutrition is not a hard task. They’re not picky eaters and will do well with a high-protein diet. With the right training, the pooch can also be coaxed into eating vegetables to provide them with additional nutrition. Since they can be quite active, the Labradoodle can be a big eater. They also require consistent gulps of water, which is why it’s important to always have fresh water accessible for the pooch.

Routine checks with the vet and a complete set of vaccinations is vital for the Labradoodle as with any other breed. Deworming every few months is also a necessity. Keep in mind that part of maintaining the health of dogs involves mental stimulation. Challenge your pooch on a routine basis, offering them commands and teaching new tricks to keep the mind sharp.

Facts - History

Labradoodle history involving purposeful breeding only goes back as far as 1989. The breed started in Australia with Wally Conron who was part of the Royal Guide Dogs Association. The goal was to create a guide dog that was also hypoallergenic – resulting to Sultan who became a huge success in filling his intended role. Today, these intended qualities for the Labradoodle are still inconsistent as breeders try to hit a standard for the pooch. Thanks to their personality however, Labradoodles easily became a favorite in most families, their gentle and loyal nature making them ideal for children. With the personality of the Labrador breed, Labradoodles were meant to become service dogs with easily-managed coats and the mild-temperament that makes them perfect for interacting with people. This is why they are currently one of the most popular “Doodle” breeds today with numerous dedicated breeders.

Today, history of Labradoodle does not involve any induction with the American Kennel Club, but many breeders are working towards this possibility. Australia however has the Australian Labradoodle Association and hopes to have the breed recognized in a few years after creating standards with multigenerational breeding.

Since standards aren’t well-established as of yet however, it’s important to note that Labradoodle puppies aren’t exactly consistent. This is why if you want to welcome a healthy pooch in your home, it’s usually best to find a reliable breeder who meets exacting standards.
