Golden Retriever History
The Golden Retriever was first bred in the Scottish Highlands in the 1800s as a hunting dog by sportsmen who wanted a breed that was suited to the terrain and climate of the area. Originally, Retrievers were bred from the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, although they were also integrated with other breeds such as the Bloodhound and Irish Setter. The result is a breed with exceptional swimming abilities. Retrievers were little known outside the UK until the 1900s, when they were first brought to the US and immediately became one of the most popular breeds of dogs.
Golden Retriever Appearance
A Golden Retriever is a powerful, active dog with a medium-length coat that comes in various shades of gold and which may become lighter or darker as the dog ages. The average weight of an adult Retriever is 65 to 75 pounds for males and 55 to 65 pounds for females. Male Retrievers should stand from 23 to 24 inches at the withers and females, 21.5 to 22.5 inches. They have an intelligent expression, with dark, medium-large eyes and pendant ears.
Golden Retriever Temperament
The Golden Retriever is known to be one of the best dogs for families, as they are friendly, affectionate and obedient, as well as being good with children. In fact, they would enjoy living with large families with active kids who would give them the physical activity they need. They also make great companions, particularly for those who are into jogging and running, since they can easily participate in virtually any outdoor activity, even swimming. Since they are good swimmers, they also have a waterproof coat. But they don’t really require a lot of exercise, since a couple of daily walks is enough to give them what they need.
If you are a first time dog owner, a Golden Retriever is a good choice as they are eager to please their masters. However, they should not be harshly treated or spoken to, since they are sensitive creatures.
Golden Retriever Role
Because of their trainability, Golden Retrievers can fulfill a variety of roles, ranging from narcotics sniffer and search and rescue dog to a hunter’s bird dog. Their alertness also makes them good watchdogs, although their friendly nature makes them less effective as guard dogs. Their trainability also makes them a good choice as companions for the elderly and the handicapped, since they can be trained as seeing-eye dogs as well as assistance dogs.
