French Bulldog History

There is no general agreement as to the origins of the French Bulldog, although most experts believe that they have descended from the English Bulldog, since large numbers of them were imported to France in the nineteenth century. Cross-breeding resulted in the bulldog developing the familiar ‘bat ears’ as well as the distinctively-shaped skull, which starts out flat between the ears then begins to curve directly above the eyes. French Bulldogs also used to have rose ears, but due to opposition by American breeders, this feature was eventually allowed to die out, resulting in Frenchies only having bat ears.

Appearance

The typical adult French Bulldog is a small to medium-sized dog that is roughly square-shaped, with some pear-shaped characteristics since their shoulders are wider than their ears. They are characterized by distinctive bat-shaped ears that are broad at their base as well as black pug noses and short tails that can be straight or curlicue.

A typical adult French Bulldog has a height around 12-inches measured from the shoulder and weighs around 25 to 28 pounds. They have a shorthaired coat that comes in white, brindle, fawn or a combination of these colors, as well as having loose, soft skin.

Temperament

French Bulldogs are seen to make excellent companions, as they are generally well behaved, even when around strange people and dogs. A French Bulldog is prone to separation anxiety when left alone for long periods; with the proper training, they will learn to deal with the situation in a proper manner. In general, however, when given the appropriate attention, Frenchies are not known to be excessive barkers.

Apart from being outstanding companion dogs, Frenchies are also good watchdogs, since they are protective of their families as well as being a bit territorial of their homes.
